The 4 Stages of Personal Power. How to Stop Reacting and Start Responding

There are moments in life where something shifts inside you. You may feel frustrated, irritated or restless. Most people misread these moments.

We may think something is wrong. Or tell ourselves we're being too sensitive, or emotional.

We then react. And we are too reactive, or not reacting enough.

None of that is true.

This is actually your power activating.

The Problem with power...

We’re not taught how to handle our power. We’re taught to suppress it or, at worst, ignore it.

We might swing the other way and express it too quickly by reacting, pushing, overwhelming ourselves and others. Because we want to be heard.

So we either hold it in or let it spill out

We rarely hold it well.

Power Moves in Stages

Your power doesn’t arrive fully formed. It moves through stages, and if you understand these stages, everything changes.

  1. Awareness 👉 I see what’s happening

  2. Regulation 👉 I don’t react immediately

  3. Choice 👉 I consciously decide

  4. Expression 👉 I act and communicate clearly

Your day is shaped by how you move through these stages and how you respond to the things that happen in your daily life. In the everyday moments:

  • a conversation

  • a reaction

  • a thought

  • a shift in mood

Power isn’t something you find; it's something you learn to move with. This month's practice takes you through these stages. You will;

  • Notice what’s happening

  • Regulate your response

  • Make conscious choices

  • Express yourself clearly

So your power becomes something you can hold, not something that overwhelms you.

The Importance of Self-Reflection

Self-reflection is a vital tool in our journey. It allows us to pause and examine our thoughts and feelings. By doing so, we can gain clarity on our current situation. This clarity can guide us toward more intentional decisions.

In moments of reflection, we can ask ourselves deeper questions. What do I truly want? What values guide my life? These questions can help us realign with our true selves.
