From Logo to Destination Brand: The Liquid Spirit Case Study

Liquid Spirit already had history, recognition and an established audience. What it lacked was a clear visual system connecting its events, communications and products.

Brand transformation is one of my favourite things. When I'm given something- a logo, an audience, a reputation, a way of doing things that has grown over time my job is to understand what makes it matter, recognise what’s missing, and give it the identity, structure and direction to grow, while staying connected to the people at its heart.

That was my starting point with Liquid Spirit.

The brand already had history and recognition within its community, but the visual identity was fragmented. Event artwork, promotional graphics, and merchandise all existed, but there was no clear system connecting them.

My role was to give Liquid Spirit a clearer identity and a more coherent, flexible brand that could grow so that I could lay the foundations for Liquid Spirit Gozo. I had a much bigger vision for what we could create on Gozo Island, and the existing LS branding didn’t reflect that ambition.

Strengthening LS gave LSG a stronger starting point, somewhere to build from as we created a festival with its own character, identity and experience.

What began as a visual identity project became a wider exercise in brand strategy, architecture, campaign development and destination branding.

Building the LS brand system.

The first stage was to redesign the Liquid Spirit identity so it could work consistently across events, digital promotion and merchandise. The objective was not to wipe away what people already recognised. It was to create a stronger framework around it.

From there, the work developed into a broader brand system. Liquid Spirit became the umbrella, with London, Gozo and later the Cotswolds able to develop their own personality while remaining part of the same family. The brand had to survive growth. It needed to be recognisable without becoming repetitive, and flexible without becoming messy.

The visual language developed in the same way. Typography, colour, photography and messaging could shift according to the event while retaining enough familiar elements to keep the brand connected.

When the brand became a destination

Liquid Spirit Gozo marked a different stage of this work. The concept developed from two complementary ideas: my vision for a festival on Gozo and Danny’s vision to take the existing Liquid Spirit community abroad. Together, those ideas became Liquid Spirit Gozo.

From the beginning, Gozo was more than a backdrop. The island shaped how the festival looked, felt and was experienced. That changed the branding challenge completely. Guests were no longer simply buying a ticket to an event. They were choosing to travel, stay, explore and spend several days immersed in a place. The brand therefore had to communicate the music alongside the island, hospitality, accommodation, atmosphere and the overall guest journey.

That is where brand strategy becomes much more than graphics. It becomes the connection between expectation and experience.

Clear roles inside a collaborative project

Liquid Spirit Gozo is a joint venture, and the strength of the project comes from different areas of experience working together.

Danny (LS) brings the existing Liquid Spirit network, artist relationships, events and sales and business experience. I bring my knowledge and relationships in Gozo, together with my experience in events, brand, marketing, communications and business development.

Together, we continue to develop Liquid Spirit Gozo. We refine each year, protect its margins

Growing the festival community

The LSG audience has grown through several connected networks: the existing Liquid Spirit community, my own audience and relationships, Gozo-based connections, artists, partners and guests who introduce others to the festival.

A festival community is not built by one source alone. The role of the brand is to make those different entry points feel part of the same world. The communication therefore goes beyond ticket sales. It builds familiarity with Gozo before people arrive, creates anticipation around the festival and keeps the relationship going after the event.

That continuity is where a brand starts to become more valuable than an advertising campaign.

The creative evolution of LSG

As Liquid Spirit Gozo developed, its visual identity became increasingly distinct from the wider Liquid Spirit brand. Gozo brought colour, landscape, environment, warmth and personality into the creative. Campaigns gradually moved away from straightforward event promotion and towards a more recognisable world built around the island, the music, the people and the feeling.

The identity also moved into merchandise and physical products, giving guests another way to carry the festival beyond the event itself.

That evolution is useful to look at because it shows what brand development actually looks like in practice. It is rarely ever one dramatic rebrand; it's a series of decisions that gradually make the brand clearer, stronger and more recognisable over time.

What this project says about the way I work

I am interested in the point where brand, strategy, design and experience meet. I do not see those things as separate disciplines.

  • Brand strategy defines what the business wants to become.

  • Design gives that direction a recognisable form.

  • Marketing builds familiarity and desire.

  • Experience proves whether the promise was true.

I work particularly well with small and growing businesses, events, hospitality brands and experience-led companies that already have something valuable but need stronger structure, clearer positioning or a more distinctive identity.

Sometimes it can start with a logo or a confused website. Sometimes with a business that has grown faster than its brand. The interesting part is working out what is really there, what needs to stay, what needs to change and how to build something that can carry the business forward.

For Liquid Spirit, that journey moved from a small community into an international destination brand.
